Last week, Academia Sinica debuted a quantum computer built on five quantum-bit (qubit) chips. The computer is connected to the Internet, allowing members and collaborators of the organization to use it for scientific research.
After the chip was created in October 23′, the computer’s introduction represented another significant step forward in the country’s research and development of quantum computing, according to Chen Chii-Dong (陳啟東), a research fellow at Academia Sinica’s Research Center of Applied Sciences.
The development of 3-qubit chips was supposed to be completed by February of last year, but researchers working on a project funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology achieved its goals ahead of schedule, he added.
Despite significant advancements made thus far, Academia Sinica stated that more work needs to be done before quantum computing technology may be used in the business world or for private purposes.
Researchers studying operational amplifiers, ultra-low temperature complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS), and quantum computing can now utilize the 5-qubit computer as a test and development platform, the company announced.
The technology behind the program’s achievements is fundamental, and before surpassing the next barrier, researchers must take time to work out basic issues, he explained.
Liao stated that Academia Sinica’s efforts in the field of quantum computing are meant to pave the way for the country’s commercial sector and create the impetus required to continue investing in individuals and training.
According to the statement, Academia Sinica, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Changhua Normal University, National Central University, National Chung Hsin University, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison are collaborating on Taiwan’s quantum computing project.
