that uses open sourced key cryptography and a standard of communication to create a “digital locker or signature” to store your online profile and your ‘notes’.
Simple terms — it’s a Twitter that is DECENTRALIZED like a D.A.O.!
Your Public-Key (PubKey) will work as your ID… while your Private Key will unlock/load your profile on any CLIENT you use — more on this below!
Your profile is ‘hosted’ by anyone who wants to host you — these are called RELAYS. Think of these like servers. You can choose which Relays you want to be hosted on. Right now they are all free and there are tonnes. (Update, there are paid ones now)
How you interact and use this Protocol is through a variety of CLIENTS. Think of these like Apps.
iPhone Apps: Damus — https://damus.io/
Android Apps: Amethyst — https://github.com/vitorpamplona/amethyst (download the APK or find in the Google Play Store for Free)
Here’s a really good explanation with more deatails: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIccRIEr2gQ
Layouts/functionalities — This is all essentially beta-testing right now and every week new functions are being developed for most clients. The cars are being built as we travel so to speak. Any particular client will do things that other clients might not.
NIP-05 — Nostr Improvement Protocol #5. This is a method of ‘verifying’ your account. It’s overly complex and someone did it for me and it didn’t really verify anything IMO other than confirm a way-point to username search for me. You’re likely to come across it though.
Generating a Pub and Private Key pair — Most Clients will prompt this immediately or will ask for you to enter them. Save them somewhere safe offline. This is essentailly your login info.
GitHub — Most of the mobile-download Clients like Damus, Amethyst etc are NOT on the Play Store, or have only been added recently (both of the aforementioned have been added as of Feb. 12, 2023). You will need to download them or others via GitHub Repositories. Use Google and find your way to them. You’ll need to follow their progress and manually download updates.
Lightning Bitcoin Payment Integration — Yes. It’s a thing. And it’s as cool as it sounds. ⚡ We’re calling them ZAPS at the moment.
Cuz you’re smart:
The UX and UI of these clients are still in Beta mode… so pumping your Private key into them has some risks.
Some clients claim to only store the key in the web browser’s cache for example, but it IS a vulnerability right now.
If your private key gets out or stolen all someone could do is also log in and view your messages or write some. So be aware of this going forward. There is a work around but I haven’t figured out how to understand it yet.
And it all get increasingly complex from there.
Send my your Pubkey or NIP-05 once you’ve figured this out and I’ll add you.
