From gifs to games, NFTs have run the gamut when it comes to the digital marketplace. But as some content creators have recently proved, non-fungible tokens have just as much of an appeal in the hands-on, physical realm as they do on the interwebs. Here are a few projects that have taken the leap from purely digital releases to NFTs that include a physical component:
Trusty Wheels
By now, Mattel should be a household-name. If you didn’t collect Hot Wheels cars growing up, you may have caught the recently successful arcade racer Hot Wheels Unleashed on new-gen consoles. Clearly, Mattel has kept its eyes on the future of digital markets. That’s why it’s little surprise to see a link to their tried and true products — the classic car collectables — opening up in the web3 space. Mattel are launching their own NFT market this December, which will offer collectors the chance to receive digital assets that contain vouchers for unique physical items. Whether you’re an automotive connoisseur or simply dig the plethora of whacky and individualised designs Hot Wheels have to offer, the NFT Garage Series 4 collection from Mattel is a physical treat in the world of web3.
Non-fungible Funko
The ever popular Pop! collectables from Funko have taken the appropriate route to streamlining their bobble-headed valuables in web3. Purchasing a digital Pop! pack will grant users 5 (for standard) or 15 (for premium) digital NFTs of beloved cartoon and pop-culture icons — from Popeye to Flash Gordon. Of course they wouldn’t be true collectables without a figurine to place on your office desk: Each digital pack will contain Redemption Tokens that will land customers a physical collectable alongside their digital offerings.
Can I Kick It?
It would be hardly fitting if stylish sneakers only existed in the digital world — pun totally intended. Thankfully, NFTSneaks by Dan Freebairn is a collection of tradable sneakers that will exist in web3 both as digital and redeemable physical assets. While the concept isn’t entirely new (Adidas and Nike have both played their hands at web3), shifting the focus to a more user-based approach is likely to please fans who are looking for something novel and altogether unique in the kicks-collection sphere. On The Rocks, Please
Whiskey fans can now ride the web3 wave — esteemed scotch makers Dewars are releasing a collection of premium blend Double-Double 21-Year-Old Rye Cask Finish bottles via BlockBar.com (who are making moves in the crossover between liquor collectables and NFTs). These rare and very consumable tokens have been described as having “subtle notes of warm wood spices, creamy vanilla, caramel shortcake and chocolate orange”. That’s easily the most delicious sounding non-fungible token we’ve heard of. Of course, collectors will have to purchase Dewars Double-Double NFTs in a digital format before redeeming their tokens for the real thing. The NFTs will also include access to a virtual whiskey tasting conference with the good folks at Dewars.
Rolling in Gold
The benefits of funding a web3 project on the back of one’s own products are becoming increasingly recognized. A great example comes from the anime-inspired metaverse company Azuki, who recently scooped up $2.5m USD in funding with their sold out collection of eight golden skateboards. That’s no metaphor either — while buyers do receive a digital depiction of their golden skateboard (in stylish anime fashion), they in fact are also privy to a redeemable voucher for the real physical thing. Not just a ‘gold-painted’ skateboard either, but a life-size 24-karat, fully functional rendition. While it’s unlikely you’ll be kick-flipping these 45-pound beasts anytime soon, the collection did well enough to have funded a myriad of other collectables and upcoming projects, all of which can be found at Azuki.
