I spoke on live radio a while back and learnt a valuable lesson in communication.
Speaking for effect and having clarity is an amazing tool every leader or founder should have in their arsenal.
You have to choose your words wisely and make them count.
You have to communicate plainly and first be absolutely clear about what you wish to say before expressing it.
And oh boy, the shorter the duration you have to communicate, the harder it gets.
Somehow when you are on live radio, time flies.
Blink and the whole interview is over.
A member of the Cabinet congratulated President Woodrow Wilson on introducing the vogue of short speeches and asked him about the time it took him to prepare his speeches.
He said:
“It depends. If I am to speak ten minutes, I need a week for preparation;
if fifteen minutes, three days;
if half an hour, two days;
if an hour, I am ready now.”
It is easy to speak freely, with no time limit or restrictions.
Your ideas can flow uninterrupted and you can patch the train of thought as you go along.
Somehow, the words can form like an imaginary path before you as you speak into eternity.
But to be succinct and make your words have impact, that’s a hard skill to master.
You have but a few moments to capture attention and seed ideas that are buried within your mind.
You have to learn how to articulate precisely and communicate for impact.
Practice what you wish to say and say it confidently.
Go slow or you will trip over your own words and sound amateurish.
Then there’s also the part of speaking to your audience and not pass them.
Know your audience and who you are speaking to and you will understand what makes them tick.
Nothing is worse than being irrelevant and “distasteful” as a speaker.
Remember, speaking loudly or being verbose is easy.
Try being articulate, clear and targeted in your communication.
Maybe that is why morse code was invented.
A few simple dots and dashes that can tell a story.
There is not much to be confused about and emotions are taken out of the equation completely.
It can be transmitted across oceans and into deep space.
It can turn the tides of wars and alter the course of history.
Now when I see famous celebrities like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos answer questions in front of hundreds of live fans, I can appreciate how composed and practiced they are.
So please, communicate with precision and practice like crazy.
